After a long day of walking around, can’t say that this would be a place I would visit again. Its a nice town, just super touristy which means VERY high prices and VERY little culture.
We woke up and had coffee by the pool while doing laundry for the first time this vacation- nice bonus! Packed up the ol backpack and headed out adventuring through town with no real goal in mind. Started off with breakfast at Breaking Bread (HAHA) where I had a bowl of frozen banana ice cream with bananas, chai seeds, oats and cinnamon in it- yummy 🙂 And Matt had a bowl of overnight oats loaded with tropical fruit. At the restaurant we saw a kitty snoozing in a planter.. apparently that is how they grow them in Costa Rica 😉
We headed from there to the beach but stopped along the way for some retail therapy that ended up being too rich for our blood. Who wants to pay $25 for a little woven bracelet??? Missing Thailand so much right now! Not to mention its the same souvenirs at every single stand including the cool artwork I got the other day 🙁 Although, I paid about $100 less where I got it than they charge here so SCORE!
Its very disheartening to be in someone else’s country and they pander to you. They play American music and speak English.. they sell stuff they know Americans will want to buy. When you are looking for an authentic experience, don’t go anywhere near the tourist spots. I want to hear Spanish music and try out my highschool spanish that I barely remember. I want to get it wrong and have them correct me and learn how things are done in their country instead of them trying to figure me out. Ok rant over…
Onto the beach. Light brown sands, very clean, and FULL of tourists. We walk all the way to the end just to have peace and quiet and spend time wading in the water and checking out the little pools in the rocks for fish, crabs, and tiny shrimps. We chill for awhile on a cool old tree that has washed up on shore and take in the scenery.
It’s about 93 Degrees F/ 33 C out and we wander off the beach to a little beach restaurant, but not before stepping on the HOTTEST SAND EVER to get there. Feeling like Pam in the office when she did the fire walk! We spend time there consuming beers, chips and guacamole, and getting pandhandled by every person on the beach looking to make some money. Matt is collecting beaded bracelets (started in Thailand) and there are A LOT of vendors that sell them here. After awhile we just tell them to leave us alone and they are respectful.
We walk to dinner as this whole day has been walking (perfectly located Airbnb) at a recommended restaurant and have some Poke bowls. Perfect fresh dish for a hot day and good reprieve from the beach. Along the way we actually walk under power lines that have monkeys crawling on them (see videos and pictures attached). I couldn’t believe it! I am sure it happens all the time here but it was still shocking!
Next was Club El where we sat on the beach again, watched the sunset and took in a fire dancing show (pictures and videos below). Very cool to see that again as we enjoyed the show in Thailand a lot!
Deciding we wanted some nightlife, we headed over to a bar that was recommended only to find out it was completely empty… OMG it’s 7:30! No wonder!!! Mine and Matt’s nightlife I guess starts early… HAHA! Walked over to the POPS (Ice cream stand) and figured we were still hungry and by the Mercado (giant outdoor food court) so we both ordered something to eat.
Quick stop at a super market for beer, quick dip in the pool sans bathing suits 😉 And now we are tuckered out again at 10:30 on a Friday night- man you just can’t hold us back can you? 😉 Not quite sure what tomorrow holds for us, need to grab some souvenirs (hopefully not crappy mass produced or expensive ones) and then maybe an excursion and different beach for sure!
We started our Thailand trip with the beach and now we are ending Costa Rica with one… I honestly wish we could turn around and go back to La Fortuna though, so much more to explore there.
